Leicester Sanvey Gate - Northgate Street - Frog Island - Woodgate Pub Crawl

In 1983 I moved to Sanvey Gate in Leicester, - and discovered a great variey of pubs within a mile or so. Now most (not all) have gone - this page recalls those days. The red circle on the map below shows the Sanvey Gate starting point -Across to Soar Lane, then along Woodgate and Frog Island towards Groby Road.

Sanvey Gate

The starting point, the Joiners Arms - run superbly in the mid eighties by Chris Carr and for a while after by his brother Dave. The building will never win awards, but was a proper beer pub, with a loyal local trade and excellently cared for "Bank's" bitter and mild. The bitter was traditionally served with a large head in the West Midlands tradition but is fine with the sparkler loosened. Now renamed the New Joiners (after a spell as the Glassy Gate) and still trading - at June 2010.

Far left, the Sanvey Gate Tavern mid 80s, middle the landlady, and right as it is at June 2010, a clinic of some sort. I preferred the Ind Coope days.

You might notice there's no pubs in these 2 photos. Far right is the site of the Great Central Hotel, - next to Shepherds Bathrooms. Left is where The Duke of Cumberland once stood. The pubs demolished in the 80s, and Shepherds has also gone, spring 2010. Do let me know if you have photos of the missing pubs

Back to the pubs. Just across the road from Sanvey Gate, past the Great Central Hotel site we have The Ship Inn on Soar Lane. A famous local Darts pub, at one time one of the few Shipstones pubs in the area. I believe this now sells "Barnsley Bitter" and Old Tom, - to be confirmed (still trading at June 2010). Leave this pub heading back towards Sanvey Gate, and turn left into Northgate Street Just across the canal in Frog Island is the North Bridge Tavern

The North Bridge Tavern. On the Left in 1987, just visible, now derelict. Went through various incarnations, some decent beer for a while, but then stupidly loud music emptied the bars and it's been shut for some time.

Continuing along Frog Island, and a pub still trading, at July 2010, "The Forresters Arms" (left). A little further on, just over the River Soar on the corner of Abbey Gate/Woodgate was the Cricketer's Rest (right) still standing but many years since its last pint.

The final two, on Woodgate. Illustrated on the left the "Friar Tuck" a bit of a no go area, but managed a pint once until watching the aggresive arm wrestling got just a bit too scary. Last but not least, just opposite the Friar Tuck, is the Old Robin Hood
